DuWayne's Story - Serving the Navy
My son Jason has been in the Navy for just a bit over 5 years. He is a Navy aircrew member serving on P-3 Orions with VP-47, a Navy squadron stationed at Kanehoe Bay, HI, charged with Anti-submarine Warfare. (ASW) duties. However, the P-3 is also capable of supporting Army and Air Force activities with several types of radar, high-resolution moving-target imagery, and several other sensors that can provide other military units with important intelligence, surveillance and reconnaisance data. VP-47 was, in fact, the very first Navy squadron in history to be stationed in a combat zone, having served 8 months at Tallil Airbase, located next to the ancient city of UR. Jason and his crew earned three air combat medals, apiece, among a number of other awards they earned as individuals and as a distinguished crew (Combat Crew-12).
Each base, whether Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Air Force, has its own "color guard." Jason was recently placed in charge of the Navy Color Guard at Kanehoe Bay. The picture from which this painting was fashioned was taken during a change of command ceremony. To Jason's right was first the American Flag, then the Navy colors, and finally another armed guard. Jason has decided to reenlist in July of this year, and plans on making the Navy a career.
